The Whuffie FactorThe year was 2005 and Tara Hunt was a relatively unknown marketer. If you knew who she was, then you must keep your ear to the ground. If you didn’t Tara… you were about to. She’s a force that luck has smiled on more then a few times over the last 5 years. She had the great opportunity to move down to San Francisco 4 years ago because of a company called Like.com (they use to be called Riya). Shel Israel is friends with the guys at Like.com and helped make the connection that landed Tara the job. Tara & Shel connected over their discuss of the kryptonite bike locks on his blog back then. Tara moved down to San Fran and did what is called Pinko Marketing. Within 24 hours of Riya launching, she had 50,000 users signed up and over 1 million photos added to the site. The down side was, some felt that the product didn’t live up to the marketing. If the product sucks, then your social capital goes down.In love & life, it’s important to be yourself and genuine.

Later Tara left and started Citizen Agency & Citizen Space. She used this time to start conferences/unconferences and built communities down in San Fran. She spent 90% of her time building communities more then anhything. She felt that getting to this point in her life was 20% skill, 30% hardwork and 50% luck. That luck came form building those communities and connecting with people. You never know when your next opportunity in life is going to come from. After almost 4 year Tara left Citizen Agency (she still has Citizen Space.) and satrted at Intuit as a marketing lead, Intuit Partner Platform. Today marks a great day for Tara as her new book The Whuffie Factor launches. It was a pleasure and fun meeting with Tara last week. I hope I get to cross paths with her again.
