Wiki logoTipster Thursdays is a monthly feature covering technology and how you can incorporate it as part of your marketing plan. We’re going to look at different pieces of technology like Twitter, Pingie, Wikis, SmugMug, Facebook and delicious and show you 5 different and unusual uses for the technology. This weeks column is going to look at wikis.

A wiki is software that allows users to create, edit, and link web pages easily. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. They are being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets and for Knowledge Management. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as “the simplest online database that could possibly work”. One of the best known wikis is Wikipedia.*

Tryout WikiMatrix, which allows you to compare all the different wikis out on the market based on your needs or a custom search. It’s a great piece of software and one I’m currently using for an internal project. 5 unusual uses for a wiki could be the following:

  1. Turn you game’s user manual into a wiki. Motorola has launched a manual wiki for it’s Q phone. Users of World of Warcraft made the WoWWiki.
  2. Plan your company’s next press or community event through a wiki
  3. Start a private wiki for beta users of your game to help improve your product development process. Have a select group of customers that collaborate on the private wiki and help define features for your product release. They can even blog about their experience and evangelize your game.
  4. Run competitions and contests through your wiki
  5. Use an internal wiki for your global marketing team to brainstorm a new marketing plan for your latest game.

Wkis are a great and simple way to bring a community together for your video game. All you need to do is wrap the wiki in a central idea and nurture your community as it grows and evolves over time.
